Sea air, lemon groves, fresh nectarines and green pear... You could be strolling through a market in Barcelona! That’s what this wine conjures up to us; the freshness of the seaside with the warmth of Mediterranean fruits. Made from traditional Cava grapes (Macabeo, Xarello and Parraleda) in vineyards in the hills behind Barcelona, this textured and refreshing wine keeps you coming back for more.. And at 11.5% you kinda can!
I can vividly remember the first time I tasted this. Mercurey is at the southern end of Burgundy, over an hours drive due south from Beaune, and it gets warmer and the grapes riper. As such the Chardonnay is wonderfully rich, ripe, and powerful, but due to Faiveley prowess nothing is allowed to go to extremes. They have managed to harness the power with soft oak ageing to produce a really single vineyard masterpiece. Treat yourself!
Domaine Faiveley Mercurey Rouge La Framboisiere Monopole
Are you prepared to treat yourself? The clue is in the name. There really are strong hints of wild strawberry and summer fruits in this stunning single vineyard gem from southern Burgundy. If you are looking to make an impression and create wonderful memories - this is your wine. I love it!
Dom Faiveley Bourgogne Chardonnay Joseph Faiveley
This was a genuine surprise, and in a really good way. Generic Bourgogne Blanc can be limp, acidic and a disappointment. This is bursting with ripe tropical fruits, and hints of delicate wild white flowers. A stunner for under £20
Ernst Gouws & Co
Ernst Gouws Chenin Blanc Stellenbosch
Chenin is South Arica's signature white grape. It is very versatile and creates wines across the spectrum of very sweet all the way to dry. This is dry and really refreshing and a wonderful example of the huge improvement in the quality of wines from this country. Traces of honey, but crisply fruity with fresh pear and green apple acidity to leave the palate refreshed and ready for another sip!
Lismore Reserve Chardonnay Greyton
Californian Samanatha O'Keefe is really blazing a trail in the mountains above False Bay. Aged in some new as well as some old oak barrells, this wine is a poised and balanced as a ballerina, and equally supple, agile and lithe. I refuse to make the old comparisons to wines of the old world, because this could well be better. Yes, and guaranteed special corks guarantee zero corked bottles, mean that careful cellaring for up to 25 years will result in incomprable results. I would rather you drink this, but investors will also be rewarded.
Louis Latour Grand Ardeche Chardonnay
We try and avoid the mainstream brands but hats off to this one. Fantastic value for money. Louis Latour have transferrred their burgundian skills further south to the warmer Ardeche and created a really stunning wine. Just try it!
Silvano Barolo Bussia Vigna Dei Fantini
Proper Barolo, from a single vineyard in one of the best communes in the region. Showing a full ruby color, brilliant and bright, the nose reveals hints of cherries and rose, alongside balsamic, thyme, tobacco and leather. Full ripe tannins, robust yet smooth on the palate and showing great length. Fabulous now or cellar for up to a decade.
Tascante Ghiaia Nera
Nerello mascalese from Mt Etna. Burgundy-esque, with added volcanicity! Stunning complexity and length. We love this wine.
Chateau de Citeaux
Intense floral notes and generous fruit aromas combine with hints of almond, spice and a linear minerality. This sunny vintage has produced a rich and concentrated style of wine, with intense apple fruit supported by a full bodied palate and a long finish. The wine is matured in the family cellars, spending 12 months in oak barrels. The use of oak is carefully monitored to ensure a pure expression of Auxey-Duresses terroir was captured. Absolutely delicious. Pair to shellfish such as crab or lobster or smoked salmon.
Vina san Esteban
In Situ Carmenere Reserva
This great value ‘Reserva’ wine shows deep aromatic complexity; black olive and pepper, blackcurrant, damson and red plum. With a medium-full body and robust character.Holds up to a wide variety of food pairings, from pasta puttanesca, to steak with peppercorn sauce. A great ‘any-day’ wine.
Primitivo, Zinfandel, Kratosija.. Same grape, different names. This grape actualy originates from eastern Europe, where it is now seeing a revival. This fantatstic example really delivers on flavour and character; intense red and black fruits, moderate tannins and a soft yet full body. Works eqaully well fireside or lightly chilled. One of our favourites in this price catergory.
Typical crisp and delicate bubbles. Pale light yellow colour, delicate and complex bouquet with fruity notes that remind of peach, green apple with second notes of acacia and lilac.Fresh and light on the palate, with balanced acidity and body; harmonic with a long persistent aftertaste.
R. Lopez de Heredia
Vina Tondonia Tinto Reserva
Classically old-fashioned Rioja that has stuck to it’s 1877 roots.Fine natural warmth and smooth, slightly nutty flavours. Full of controlled evergy and a firm finish.A really lovely wine. Steven Spurriers choice.
Turkey Flat Vineyard
Turkey Flat Barossa White
A layered & thought-provoking blend inspired by the whites of the Rhone Valley. The underlying rich medley of fresh & roasted stone fruit is topped with a toasty note of spice-laced crumb. Balanced with a restrained zesty hit of ginger on the lingering finish.
Southern Right Sauv Blanc
Fantastic palate complexity ahead of pure, pungent varietal aroma. Grapefruit, green pepper and elderflower leap from the glass. Lovely mid-palate structure adding to the overall complexity to this wine. Long and developing finish.
Southern Right Pinotage
Southern Right is re-defining Pinotage with this intense classically styled, claygrown wine, packed with complex berry fruit, beautiful tannins and subtle wood spice. Full ripeness and the longer hang-time afforded by cooler sites, combined with the complex, more classic fruit aromas and structure resulting from clayrich soil, make this wine a highly individual expression of South Africa’s unique grape variety.
Percheron Shiraz Mouvedre
Percheron is a French breed of workhorse, and this is our "workhorse" red. It is a real stalwart and hugely popular. Medium bodied, full of red fruit flavours and oh so clean on the palate. Tremendous value.
Ontanon Rioja ORGANIC
Produced from 57ha of low-yielding organic vineyards, Ontañón make 300 barrels dedicated to organic wines. Harmonious and elegant, this is everything modern Rioja should be. Deep and concentrated but with a refershing lightness on the palate. A touch of smokiness that leads to a long and moresih finish.
Nuovo Quadro Gavi di Gavi
A fine, single estate Gavi di Gavi from a 5 hectare plot on the La Battistina estate - textured and complex whilst retaining bright acidity. Pear and quince are balanced by notes of blanched almond and bay leaf. A very enjoyable wine of excellent quality.
Chateau de Citeaux
Meursault, Vieux Clos du Chateau de Citeaux Monopole
A wonderful expression of an extremely fine Chardonnay, with intense floral and citrus fruits combined with nutty, spicy nuances. Full bodied yet silky on the palate, this has an extraordinarily fine, long finish.
Michel Chapoutier's homage to his grand father. Syrah and Grenache blend.Grown in the South of France but unmistakenly the work of a man from the Rhone!
Brilliant and pale yellow with green tints. The nose is very open, with citrus aromas and notes of grapefruit and ripe fruit. An ample palate, rich and fruity. Well balanced acidity and ripe fruit avours allow for a wine with great persistancy.
Los Haroldos Seleccion de Familia Malbec
Looking for a great Argentinian Malbec - then look no further! Deep, rich and unctious. Layers of Chocolate, mocha, and dark berry fruit, with a touch of tobacco and sweet spice. Something a little bit special here - not your supermarket Malbec.
Los Haroldos Roble Chardonnay
Wow I love this wine. The fruit palette is very ripe rich and tropical. Think Papaya, Banana and Peach. Toasty oaky flavours of vanilla and honey evolve and wrap the wine in an oaky embrace. Bargain Burgundy.
Los Haroldos Roble Blend
Mainly Malbec but slended with a little Cabernet and even less Petit Verdot. Dark purple, with rich berry fruits with nuances of mocha and chocolate. Great with roast beef, or bbq ribs.
Les Volets Chardonnay Pays de la Haute Vallee de l'Aude
From the Haute Vallée de L’Aude comes this Chardonnay with great citrus acidity complimented perfectly with just the right amount of creamy texture from a small portion that sees oak.
Langlois Chateau Cremant de Loire Rose
Light pink in colour and an elegant nose of red fruit. The wine displays a fresh, fruity and full-bodied palate bursting with raspberry and blackcurrant.
Hamilton Russell Chardonnay
A tight, minerally wine with classic Hamilton Russell Vineyards length and complexity. Unusually prominent pear and lime fruit aromas and flavours are brought beautifully into focus by a tight line of bright natural acid and a long, dry minerality. An elegant, yet textured and intense wine with a strong personality of both place and vintage.
Hamilton Russell Vineyards
Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir
On low-vigour, stony, clay-rich soil, in a cool maritime mesoclimate, naturally tiny yields of well under 35 hl/ha give rise to a certain tightness, tannin line and elevated length to balance the richness and generosity of this Pinot Noir. The wine is not overtly fruity but it is soft and generous and shows hints of alluring savoury “primal” character along with a dark, spicy, complex primary fruit perfume. Classy and classic.
Demeter Zoltan Tokaj Eszter
Golden colour, gloriously scented, and sumptuously fruited. Luscious pineapple and barley sugar sweetness, butterscotch, brown sugar and marmalade. Juicy and unctuous, balanced by bright lemon-curd acidity. Very long.
Cottonworth Classic Cuvee
The best English sparkling wine we have tasted, and judging by all the awards they are winning we are not alone. Made with Ponot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Menieur it is bursting with fresh acidity. Glorious.
Boutinot Schisteux Seguret Red
One of our absolute bestsellers, this villages-quality Rhone wine seriously over-delivers. Supple and rounded, whilst packing a hit of white pepper and spice over generous dried strawberry andd herbal notes. Delicately oaked, this is soft and velevty yet structured enough to hold up to robust Southern-French cuisine, which it compliments wonderfully.
Bollinger Special Cuvee
Special Cuvée is the result of the delicate blending between harvest grapes and a majority of Reserve Wines in magnums, including some aged for more than 15 years in Bollinger’s cellars. In 1911, Bollinger’s British agent gave the idea for the name Special Cuvée - “special” written the English way, without an accent. He thought the French expression “Brut sans année” was no match for such a subtle champagne… More than a hundred years later, the name of Bollinger’s key figure champagne still symbolizes both its expertise and its history. A golden colour with a beautifully fine mousse. The nose is aromatic and complex with ripe fruit and spicy aromas. Roasted apples, apple compote and peaches burst on the palate. Brioche and notes of fresh walnut linger on the lasting finish. A subtle combination of structure, length and vivacity.
Complex and elegant aromas of blackberries, ripe plums and cherries combine with subtle hints of vanilla and toasty notes. Beautifully textured with a mouth-filling palate of ripe fruits against a mineral backdrop and a long lasting finish. A truly stunning wine at this price and Decanter's Platinum Award winner 2018
Ayala Brut Majeur
Ayala Brut Majeur is elegant, pristine, energetic and dry without being arid. It’s made with a 40 percent Chardonnay base and Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. A beautiful Champagne. House pour in The Woodspeen and Gordon Ramsey.
Lifted aromas of blackcurrant and blueberries. The palate is bright and well-defined with layers of black cherry, plum and dark spice, over ripe tannins.
Ripe and intense plum fruit with subtle cinnamon spice lift defines the nose. The concentration of the primary fruit aromatics builds with airing, giving further dimension. Licorice and lavender florals elegantly unfold into a gentle gamey bouquet. Generous and succulent with a silky and supple tannin texture, and juicy acidity giving impressive length and persistence. Brightness and approachability are the driving force of this wine, however a hint of complexity we have come to expect from this vineyard adds a layer of real and intriguing character to the fruit depth.
Akitu A1 Pinot Noir
Moderately intense ruby colour with a garnet hue. Spiced cherry primary fruit and dusty dried herb aromas build gently on the nose. The subtle aromatics in time give way to dark plum fruit characters with a background of brown spices and leafy complexity. Considerable depth and dimension is revealed that belies the intensity of bouquet. Brooding aromatics driven by a precise fruit focus. The dark juicy plum drives a generous entry to the palate and that spiced cherry adds great focus and length of flavour. Cinnamon and subtle anise characters are woven into the tactile structure of the wine. The tannin backbone compliments juicy acidity giving a velvety yet lively texture and a mouth-watering finish. Tension with restraint.
AIX now available in 75 cl! Magnums and larger formats are also available. Fragrant and well balanced, salmon pink in colour the nose is fresh and fragrant, delicate yet youthful and offers classy notes of watermelon, strawberries and flowers.
