Meursault, Vieux Clos du Chateau de Citeaux Monopole
A wonderful expression of an extremely fine Chardonnay, with intense floral and citrus fruits combined with nutty, spicy nuances. Full bodied yet silky on the palate, this has an extraordinarily fine, long finish. Delightful.
Lismore Reserve Chardonnay Greyton
Californian Samanatha O'Keefe is really blazing a trail in the mountains above False Bay. Aged in some new as well as some old oak barrells, this wine is a poised and balanced as a ballerina, and equally supple, agile and lithe. I refuse to make the old comparisons to wines of the old world, because this could well be better. Yes, and guaranteed special corks guarantee zero corked bottles, mean that careful cellaring for up to 25 years will result in incomprable results. I would rather you drink this, but investors will also be rewarded.
Cervaro della Sala, Umbria
A blend of Chardonnay grapes and a small quantity of Grechetto make a wine that can age over time and represent the elegance and complexity of this unique estate. Cervaro della Sala was one of the first Italian white wines to have malolactic fermentation and aging take place in oak barriques. A masterful wine, from THE Italian winemakers, Antinori.
Sepp Moser Gruner Veltliner Breiter Rain
Impressive Gruner Veltliner from the low yielding Breiter Rain vineyard. An inviting and voluptuous nose with spicy fruit and hints of honeysuckle. Textural and weighty on the palate - slightly honeyed with smoky notes, stone fruit, fresh balancing acidity and a long, dry finish. This is a serious wine with an ageing potential of 8+ years.
Quinta do Pinto Lisbon
Quinta do Pinto, Grande Escolha, Lisboa
This estate bottled wine masterfully blends Viognier,Chardonnay, and Marsanne to create a southern Rhone style white wine, with distinctive Portuguese character. Intense aromas of tropical and stone fruit are layered with brioche and ginger spice. The palate is ripe and textural with mango, peach and apricot, with rich honey and almond notes leading to a full and long finish, with freshly balanced acidity. Its persistence and palate weight scream quality and show this to be a truly distinguished wine.
Teruzzi Terre di Tufi Toscana Bianco 2016
Three grape varieties are used for Terre di tufi: Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Chardonnay and Sauvignon. They are planted on tufa soils typical of the region of San Gimignano. Some of the wine ferments in steel vats and another in barrels giving a harmonious balance of fresh and matured fruit character. At the end of fermentation, the wine matures for several months in barrels (1/3 of new wood). Aromatic complexity and quality winemaking determine the uniqueness of this Italian wine.
Conte della Vipera, Umbria
A white Bordeaux-blend from the esteemed Antinori estate in Umbria, Italy. Pale straw-yellow in colour with greenish highlights, the floral and herbaceous notes of the Sauvignon blanc emerge first, followed by enticing hints of white fruits, of citrus, and pineapple. The palate shows a fine balance, with weight and texture from the Semillon complimented by the Sauvignon's bright acidic structure and steely, floral complexity. A mouthwatering finish and of much length and persistence.
Chateau Montelena Chardonnay, Napa Valley, California
In 1976, in what is now memorialized as “The Judgment of Paris”, Chateau Montelena Napa Valley Chardonnay was the top-ranking wine against four white Burgundies and five other California Chardonnays in a blind tasting with a who’s-who of the french food and wine industry judging. And as they say, the rest is history. Montelena's 2016 Chardonnay is terrific. Fresh, nuanced and light on its feet, the 2016 is striking for its freshness and understated intensity. Lemon peel, almond, chamomile and floral overtones add shades of nuance throughout, but above all else, the 2016 stands out for its bright, crystalline tension and overall energy.
Hamilton Russell Chardonnay, Hemel en Aarde Valley 2017
A tight, minerally wine with classic Hamilton Russell Vineyards length and complexity. Unusually prominent pear and lime fruit aromas and flavours are brought beautifully into focus by a tight line of bright natural acid and a long, dry minerality. An elegant, yet textured and intense wine with a strong personality of both place and vintage.
The Eyrie Vineyards
Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Blanc, Oregon. ORGANIC
From the family who first planted grapes in this now legendary Oregon wine region! This is an epic wine, aromatically intriguing, with wild ‘summer-meadow’ pollens that give both scent and flavour. Crunchy tree fruits, clean straw and even a whiff of bread dough combine in a lingering finish. Wonderful. *Organic*
