What a find from this tiny, yet esteemed, family-owned winery in Tokaj, Hungary (the oldest classified wine region in Europe, c.1737). Specialists in the Furmint grape variety, this estate is steeped in history. Located in the crazy sounding village of Mád (regarded as Tokaj's most important and prestigious wine area), the vineyards have been in the family for centuries. The opportunity to build the Kardos winery only became possible after the Central and Eastern Europe revolution of 1989 allowed diversification. From humble beginnings of selling wines from their cellar door and to local bars, this boutique winery began to flourish under the directorship of the owner’s son, Gábor Jnr. who came on board full time in 2008.
A deliciously rich, waxy and textured wine, with aromas of gooseberries, greengages, quince, pear and lime. Fine and rounded on the palate with wonderful fresh and baked apple flavours and an orange peel note on the finish. Dry and beautifully crisp, complex and elegant. Perfect as an aperitif or try with seafood linguine, salads and cheese.
