The legendary Boekenhoutskloof was instrumental in making the region of Franschhoek what it is today. Always forward-thinking, they’re now also looking upwards, and have started picking up parcels of vines from further afield, some up mountains. The latest addition to the range is this Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon (with just a dash of Cabernet Franc), hailing from the slopes of the Helderberg mountain range. Quite different from Boekenhoutskloof’s Franschhoek Cabernet Sauvignon, this is herbier, more mineral and more graphite-y. The bright cherry, plum and blackberry fruit is laced with Provençal herbs, fresh sage, pencil shavings, woodsmoke, tobacco and incense. Serve this sleek and sophisticated wine alongside slow-cooked comfort food, Mexican dishes or roast lamb, and revel in a winery that’s maturing with grace.
