Percheron is a French breed of workhorse, and this is our "workhorse" red. It is a real stalwart and hugely popular. Medium bodied, full of red fruit flavours and oh so clean on the palate. Tremendous value.

A cracking value red blend from Alentejano, in the south of Portugal.  Based on Tempranillo, known locally as Aragonez, this shows lifted aromas of blackcurrant and blueberries and just a touch of florality. The palate is bright and well-defined with layers of black cherry, plum and dark spice, over ripe tannins. Great stuff!

A very smart Syrah from one of our favourite South African producers, this is plush, polished and seriously appealing. Fresh and lifted berry fruit aromas make for a very inviting nose; full yet elegant, with bramble, cassis and black cherry. These flavours follow on the palate with a typical Syrah note of black pepper spice. Fine, ripe tannins with a long rich, finish. Astonshing value.

Ripe, appealing aromas of plums, blackberries, and cherry and a hint of milk chocolate. Rich and spicy on the palate with dark fruit, balancing acidity and soft tannins.

Bodegas Juan Gil own over 500 hectares of vineyards, between 700 and 850 metres altitude, in the northwest of Jumilla: old bush vine Monastrell planted in chalky soils, and Shiraz grown in sandy soils on younger, trellised vines. Vinification is carried out at the winery in the heart of the Juan Gil vineyard area. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, temperature controlled, and the juice maintains contact with the skins during this 10-day process.

Will match up with rich pasta dishes with salami or ham, or a premium, meat-rich, lasagna with layers of meatballs and slices of pepperami in the mix! Sunny weather? - perfect for barbecues too.

Go to the filing cabinet marked ‘Value’ and file this under ‘Ridiculous’. Not because it's a show-stopping 100-pointer, but because it simply made us want to drink it. Lots of it. And isn't that the point? And did we mention that it’s fantastic value?
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo, aged for a year in American oak and tastes like two much-loved wine styles rolled into one. The Cabernet Sauvignon shines through on the nose with rich leafy blackcurrant and dusty cherries, reminiscent of a good Medoc. On the palate, we find the most deliciously juicy and succulent cassis flavours married to classic Spanish Crianza notes of coconut and vanilla. What we love about it is its freshness and moreishness and its quiet insistence that the next sip is going to be even better than the last, which, for us, is the definition of a great wine. 13.5% alc. Drink now-2040 (yes you read that right).

 

An easy drinking Italian red made from Corvina and Merlot from the shores of Lake Garda. Perfect party wine.

This is a family run winery, in the heart of Redondo, with a deep love and understanding of the viticultural heritage of their region. Alexandre Relvas started in 1997, and his two sons Alexandre Jr and António now run the show, ably supported by Head Winemaker Nuno Franco and his team at the Pimenta Winery.

Herdade São Miguel is the original, flagship estate which comprises 35 Ha of vineyard as well as Cork forest and olive groves and a heathy flock of Merino sheep. The family develop their enterprise locally and globally, committing to ambitious environmentally sustainable and socially responsible policies so the benefits are shared, and added value is retained.

The wines are bold in expression, varied in style and authenticity shines through them all.  This, their tinto, is a blend of Aragonez (Tempranillo), Alicante Bouschet and Antao Vaz - all indigenous to this sunnny, windswept area of Portugal - and create such a generous, moresih wine that is both soft and satisfying all at once. Great dinner-party wine  - it's hard not to like this!

Textured and luxurious this is a sophisticated Cabernet Franc from Gard. There is a wild 'after the rain' woodland perfume, with menthol and truffley hints. The palate is incredibly long and layered with bramble fruit, earthy peppery layers and a touch of sweet prune on the finish.

Juicy lamb shanks, rich tomato based dishes laced with roasted garlic and pepper, marinated steak with mashed potato and green beans or savour it at the end of the meal over a good cheeseboard.

The hand-picked grapes are sourced from selected vineyards in the Dao region south of the Douro Valley, where old vines are tended traditionally in granite soil. The grapes undergo a cold, pre-fermentation maceration for 5 days, followed by a final alcoholic fermentation lasting around 4 days. The wine also undergoes malolactic fermentation, and is then matured for 12 months in (2nd year) French and Russian oak.

Immediately juicy with lots of bramble fruits and polished aromatics. Underlying savoury and herbal character with silky, supple black fruit. Soft tannins with hints of pine and vanilla on the elegant finish.

Goes well with grilled beef or lamb or robust stew. For a veggie alternative try with spinach and lentil casserole.

Warm, spicy aromas of blueberries and plums, with subtle, smoky notes. The palate combines generous ripe fruit with lively acidity, juicy cherry characters and spicy notes beneath. Supple tannins offer an extra dimension to the texture. A refreshing smack of fruity acidity on the finish gives plenty of definition to the ripe fruit.

Great with simple dishes such as pizza and pasta, or drink with lamb shank.
